How does the Fitness Leader registration program work?

The process to become a Fitness Leader is a bit complicated and has to be done in a certain order. The BCRPA website have more details of the process, but in short these are the steps (in this order):

  1. Pass the BCRPA Fitness Theory Examination ($70.00 exam fee for each attempt).  We organize this exam at the studio.
  2. Obtain CPR (minimum level A) and First Aid Certifications (minimum Emergency First Aid).
  3. Register with BCRPA in Fitness Theory ($95.00 fee)
  4. Once you have received your Fitness Theory certificate you can choose a "Speciality Module" course. Our yoga teacher training and Pilates mat level 1 are registered as specialty module courses.
  5. Complete all practicum and Instructor Competency Evaluation (ICE) Requirements for your chosen Specialty Module.  We organize this at the studio.
  6. Register with BCRPA in your Specialty Module. Done!

Exception from the rule:  If you already have completed a 200 hour yoga alliance approved yoga teacher training you can apply to by-pass step 4.

Prep-course

The anatomy training in the yoga teacher training is also a prep-course for the BCRPA Fitness Theory exam. You can sign up for the prep-course without participating in the current YTT program. The next prep-course is scheduled for March 17-18, 9:30 AM - 4:00 PM. The cost is $ 140 and includes the administration of the exam. Note: the prep-course is an integral part of the YTT program at no extra cost.

The course literature is: Fitness Theory Manual 3rd Edition by Silvia Isachsen. (Silvia also has a 3 book study package that includes practice tests).

Fitness Theory Examination

We will hold the next Fitness Theory Exam at the studio on March 18 at 4:15PM. The cost is $20 for proctoring the exam (included in the price of the prep-course). At the end of the exam we collect the tests and send them to BCRPA for correction. Your BCRPA exam fee ($70) needs to be sent in to the BCRPA at the same time so please bring a cheque or your credit card information.

Register online for the exam here and for the prep course (including the test) here.

Pilates Fitness Leader

Our Pilates Mat Level 1 is approved by BCRPA as a speciality module course for Pilates. The Pilates course has to be taken after the Fitness Theory certificate is completed (step 4 above). After the Pilates course you will also have to complete a practicum and a Instructor Competency Evaluation (ICE).

Yoga Fitness Leader

Our Yoga Teacher Training program is approved by BCRPA as a specialty module course for yoga. The YTT program can be taken after the Fitness Theory certificate is completed (step 4 above). After the YTT program you will also have to complete a practicum and an Instructor Competency Evaluation (ICE).

If you already have a YTT designation you can apply to bypass step 4 in the process above. You will still need to get the Fitness Theory certificate before you can become a registered Yoga Fitness Leader.
