Like anything new, deciding to attend your first yoga class can be intimidating, however, being prepared can help ensure your experience is a positive one. Whether you’re looking to kick-start a new lifestyle, or are simply curious about trying a class, today’s blog offers some helpful tips for beginners.
Choose the Right Yoga Class
Choosing the right class is important for a first time student. Classes such as Beginner Hatha/Hatha Flow are popular because they focus on connecting your movement with your breath. Feel Good Yoga and Pilates offers many classes suitable for beginners, including Hatha Yoga and Gentle Therapeutic Yoga.
Eating and digesting food can have a big impact on your yoga practice. It is advisable to not eat for two hours before your class and, ideally, you will want to eat a relatively light meal of carbohydrates for energy, protein to build and maintain muscles and good fats to keep you satiated.
Hydration is particularly important for the body every day, but especially on days when taking a yoga class. The amount of water you need to drink will vary depending on the intensity of the yoga poses. It is a good idea to begin increasing your water intake the night before, and throughout the day, leading up to your class.
Dress for Success
The most important thing is to be comfortable while you’re moving. Fabrics that are breathable, such as bamboo, jersey or cotton, are excellent choices for your practice. The amount of clothing you choose to wear may be different depending on the type of yoga class but it is always a good idea to layer.
Clothing that is form fitting, but non-restrictive, is ideal to help you and your instructor ensure correct alignment.
Lastly, have fun and do what feels good for your body. Over time you will discover what works best for you and your practice.
Good luck on your yoga journey!
